The museum was built to showcase the scientific collections gathered by the Prince during his 28 oceanographic expeditions between 1885 and 1915.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea for a permanent biology laboratory and exhibition space matured in Prince Albert I following the successful presentation of his scientific collections at the 1889 Paris World&#8217;s Fair. The first stone was laid on April 25, 1899, and the Oceanographic Institute was formally founded as a public utility in 1906.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prince Albert I (Founder): Known as the &#8220;navigator prince,&#8221; personally directed 3,698 operations at sea. More than half of the museum&#8217;s natural history collection consists of specimens he collected during his campaigns.\u00a0 Jacques-Yves Cousteau (Director 1957\u20131988), served as director for 31 years.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are just a very few of the things we saw and I\u2019m putting here\u2026but there was so much more. Initially, as you saw above you enter a great hall that has a number of similar sized rooms where they hold international seminars. But when you start down the stairs into where the aquarium resides, you\u2019re drawn into the realm of the sea by the lights and reflections opening up before you\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-367 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5-IMG_6790-nice-monaco-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5-IMG_6790-nice-monaco-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5-IMG_6790-nice-monaco.jpeg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing you see is an aquarium that was nearly 18-20 foot high by 24 feet wide and who knows the third dimension was.\u00a0 And by watching one of the two divers cleaning a glass partition, you realize there was not one but two aquariums that appeared as one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-368 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6-IMG_6796-nice-monaco-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6-IMG_6796-nice-monaco-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6-IMG_6796-nice-monaco.jpeg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They even had a cylindrical aquarium with water swirling within it that had the stingless jellyfish from Palau\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-371 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Monaco-IMG_8668-Jellyfish-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Monaco-IMG_8668-Jellyfish-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Monaco-IMG_8668-Jellyfish.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were fish, mollusks, crustaceans, jellyfish, corals, sea anemones, starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sponges, sea turtles, sea snakes, and so much more.\u00a0 Here\u2019s just a few of what we saw\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-372 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7-Aquarium-Life-1-300x131.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7-Aquarium-Life-1-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7-Aquarium-Life-1-1024x448.png 1024w, https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7-Aquarium-Life-1-768x336.png 768w, https:\/\/fonh.com\/sacruise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7-Aquarium-Life-1.png 1371w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the aquarium we were hungry and found a rrestauranr near the marina\u2026unfortunately for our view, they were building stands &amp; bleachers for people to watch the upcoming Formula1 races about to be run in Monaco.
